HELPING AN UPSET STOMACH

There is nothing worse than when your dog is vomiting and has diarrhea. Especially if it's all over your carpet! If your pet is lethargic, not eating, and/or this problem has been going on for some time, we recommend coming in for an examination. However, if it has just started, and your pet is acting normal, you may try the following:
Vomiting and/or Diarrhea
If your pet is vomiting or has diarrhea but seems to be feeling well otherwise, we recommend trying a FOOD CHALLENGE first. If this does not help or your pet's symptoms become worse, please contact our office as soon as possible.
New Diet
Some pets get an upset stomach from a new diet. If you are switching your pet's food, start with 90% old food and 10% new food for the first day, then gradually go down until you are 100% to the new food. Switching suddenly can be hard for your pet, so if this is the reason your pet stomach is upset, give him some time to adjust.
Parasites
In this part of the country, there are lots of places for our dogs to roam and lots of things for them to get into. This includes river water, ponds, carcasses, animal feces, and others. All of these things have the potential to harbor parasites that your pet may pick up after contact with them. If you know your pet gets into things that may carry parasites it's important to regularly deworm him. If your pet is current on exams and vaccines, call our office and we would be happy to help you get some dewormer for your pet.
If you are concerned about your pet's health, or have questions on any of these issues, do not hesitate to contact our office. You may also use the Pet Library to look up specific symptoms.
